I grew up near Excelsior, MN. One important piece of growing up for me was my time as a lifeguard and swimming instructor.
I attended Dordt College in Iowa. Always a passionate learner, I knew I wanted to teach, but there were just so many amazing subjects to learn that I had to change my major several times (German, History, Math, Computer Programming) within the Education Department before I settled on Elementary Education with Fields of Specialty in History and Social Studies. My love of the psychology of learning lead me to participate in an extra endorsement program for middle school.
While at Dordt I met and married my husband Casey. We have been married since 1999 and have three children who are also Eagle Ridge students. As a family we all enjoy a lot of reading, as well as being active in our church. The kids and I are all involved in scouting as well. This leads to many summer camping trips. I am amazed by nature and this world that we have been given to care for. I enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle and spending time in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. I am always up for discovering a new place and people. I have enjoyed some travel and hope to do even more in the future. One favorite trip was my 8th grade class trip to see our country's roots and government in Washington DC, Boston, & Philadelphia. As a family we have made several trips to Central America to visit my husband's parents.
I began working in schools as a swimming paraprofessional for Minnetonka Public Schools. After earning my license I substitute taught in Minnetonka, Hopkins, and Wayzata. I was a special education para for a year and then spent the bulk of my teaching experience at a small private school in Bloomington. During those 10 years I mainly taught 4th grade, but also taught 3rd grade Social Studies and Science, High School Government and World History, K-4 Spanish, and Preschool.
I started at Eagle Ridge as a kindergarten EA in 2015. The next school year I was one of our building substitute coordinators and I was able to go all over the school and see the big picture of how our curriculum fits together. It was an amazing year observing the many talented and hard working teachers at ERA. I have been on the 5th grade team since 2017. We have an excellent group of teachers and the curriculum that we get to teach is both challenging and interesting.
I believe that our character truly affects our learning and that we must cultivate the wisdom to apply knowledge and skills. The pillars of Eagle Ridge are not isolated side topics in my class, but a part of each subject and lesson. At Eagle Ridge we teachers have the opportunities to continue learning ourselves, and I am enjoying participating in the Masters of Classical Education program.
